Abstract

This essay addresses the different readings of female self-awareness that appear in Jane Eyre from a cross-cultural perspective. It begins with the interpretation of changing women’s social status in 19th-century Britain and the challenges faced by women’s fiction in Victorian times. It also reveals Jane Eyre’s self-consciousness and independent thinking while she undergoes her process of development. The essay also discusses gender equality in the relationship between Rochester and Jane as well as her rebellious character when confronted with gender roles and societal pressure. Finally, based on the contemporary women’s movement and literature, the essay touches on the meaning of Jane Eyre’s awakening for women today, noting her symbolic position within the global feminist movement.
